Fresh Fruit vs. Frozen Fruit

  • Jul 21, 2008
  • Post a comment

It's not an entirely fair debate as fresh fruit usually wins out. However, there's a problem with fresh...

Fresh usually doesn't mean fresh. When you go to the store to buy a "fresh" tomato out of the bin. You're actually buying a green tomato that was picked the week before, then shipped to a factory and sprayed with chemicals to make it turn red. Finally, the tomato is delivered to the store, where it ripens off the vine, in other words, it just becomes mushy. That's fresh for you.

Canned tomatoes (and remember, tomatoes are a fruit, so we are in the same realm here), are picked when they have fully ripened, and they are usually canned at the same facility on the same day. So when it comes to tomatoes, "fresh" isn't necessarily better.

Blueberries and other berries have similar drawbacks, but for the most part you're going to win when you buy fresh berries. The one good thing about frozen blueberries, is they really work well when you throw them in a weight loss shake.

Finally, you're not getting any omega 3 benefits whether you buy fresh fruit or canned fruit, so be sure to add some nuts to that fruit salad you're making!

Fruit of the Loom

  • Post a comment

Why not? I can't talk about real fruit anymore because I'm not eating real fruit (though I did cheat and had some grape jelly over the weekend, does that count as real fruit? Probably not). Anyway, I'm sticking to the health blog way of life, which is a paleo diet sort of nutritional lifestyle, which means no sugar! Or very little sugar at least, but I explained all that in a previous post. This month I'm talking about a different sort of fruit: Fruit of the Loom!

That's right, underwear. I love it.  Not is a sexual way. I'm not a panty freak, or a cross dresser, and while women's underwear IS sexy, today I'm talking about good old boxers and briefs.

The long debate is silly and (pardon the pun) fruitless, as its personal preference and no one REALLY cares anyway. I prefer the boxer-brief myself, a nice little combination of the two.

What I really appreciate, though, is a fresh new set of well designed underwear. And that is NOT fruit of the loom unfortunately. Fruit of the loom is what Mom buys from Wal-Mart when she's trying to clothe the twelve children she should never had had (sorry for the brutality, I still have an old prejudice against white trash, since I used to be white trash myself, perhaps still am)

But I digress. The best underwear comes from REI. It's that sturdy mountain climbing underwear that just doesn't let you down, no matter how much you weigh or what sort of diet you're on, whether jenny craig, weight watchers, the paleo diet, or any other.

Fruits' Abandon

  • May 20, 2008
  • Post a comment

I have a abandoned fruit. How sad.

My love affair with fruit must come to rest for the time being. I am trying a new low carb diet, and as healthy as fruit pretends to be, most fruits contain a great deal of sugar. Even if the sugar in fruit is twenty times healthier than, say, high fructose corn syrup, sugar is sugar and right now I can't have much of it.

There are a few fruits low in sugar. Apparently blueberries are pretty good for going low carb. Unfortunately blueberries are expensive as hell this time of year, maybe in august they'll be cheaper to eat.

And regardless, I really am trying to limit all carbs right now, so that means no fruit for me. I pine for a bowl of strawberries, or a handful of peach cobbler, or even just a couple golden delicious apples. But those will have to wait until the weight is lost. I'm trying to get washboard abs using a high protein diet. At best I do less than 100 carbs a day, and a couple apples would put me right over that bar.

In regards to other stuff, I found some vitamins online which are working great for my body. The current multivitamin I am taking is called the damage control master formula, and I couldn't be more satisfied. I'll probably keep taking it until it doesn't fit into my budget anymore.

So, farewell fruits, and may I meet up with you a month from now, a stronger, healthier person.

Bananas and Platanos

Bananas are a fruit, but are platanos?

Most people think the two are the same thing. They look almost exactly the same. And doesn't...

Oh bullocks, fruit is an awful blog topic. I don't think I can do more than 4 good posts on fruit. I'll admit I was running out of ideas when I though of this. I thought I could ride it out on antioxidants or some such garbage, but the fact of the matter is, I don't know much about fruit.

So instead I'm going to tell you a little bit about orthorexia nervosa. Holy shit! It's orthorexia, who really cares about this eating disorder, well hopefully enough people to make our little post on orthorexia a major hit.

The other thing I need to tell (am obliged to tell you) about is the term people search engines. How exciting is that? Not very, but click the link god damn you, click it!

The Apple in Blueberry

  • Mar 27, 2008

It's no big secret that blueberries are an antioxidant. The help with damage control, and decrease inflammation and excess oxidation in the body.

Thus, blueberry drinks have become all the rage at juice bars, health food stores, and even right down to the local quickie mart.

Unfortunately, very few of these blueberry drinks are actually blueberries. Pomegranate (as I've mentioned earlier) is another antioxidant and one respectable thing about the Pom (TM) people is that Pom is pure pomegranate juice and nothing else.

Blueberry juice, howeveer, has fallend the way of most fruit drinks, in that it is primarily apple juice. Check the label, the first ingredient in almost all the blueberry drinks out right now is NOT blueberry. In fact, even the hip new drink "Pur Blu" is anything but. Blueberries are the fifth (fifth!) ingredient in Pur Blu. What do we do?

The simple fact of the matter is, pure blueberry juice isn't quite as sweet as people like in their drug store fix ups. Just imagine of sprite were made with actual lemons. It would be something quite different.

Anyway, I've been doing my blueberries recently in weight loss shake form. I just mix a handful of frozen blueberries into a vanilla protein shake and I'm certain I've got a bigger serving of blueberries that is in Pur Blu, Snapple Blueberry, or Nature's Way blueberry tea.

The Pomegranate is a Master Formula

  • Feb 14, 2008

The pomegranate truly is a master formula of antioxidant goodness. It may not have everything. It doesn't contain any omega 3 capsules, but it sure has a lot of health going on for a fruit.

Antioxidants in basic form, reduce the amount of radical oxydation that takes place in the body, ultimately reducing inflamation. Common antioxidants are blueberries, agai plant, and even cactus juice, but pomegranate ranks right near the top.

Other than having extremely healthy properties, the pomegranate is tasty! It has a tart berry flavor, and the seeds are fun to pop in the mouth by the handful. Be careful what clothes you wear when scraping into a pomegranate, because the juice is dark red and can stain, but if you're wearing red, or you just don't care, it's a silly fun fruit.

I recently took up a habit of frozen yogurt. It's healthier than ice cream, and still quite delicious. And I have found one of the best toppings for a cup full of frozen yogurt is pomegranate seeds. Pink berry usually keeps them in stock, though they are seasonal.

they only problem with the pomegranate is the price. They tend to be expensive, especially if you want organically grown ones.

Buy hey, can you put a price on deliciouis food and good health?

Fruit Balls

Fruity pebbles contains neither fruit, nor pebbles.
Fruit of the Loom is not a fruit, nor is it made with a Loom.

I enjoy Fruit.

Apples, tangerines, lemons, raw limes, grapes, grapefruits, pomegranate, I love them.

I hate starfruit.

But today, I especially love the Grapple.

Pronounced "Grape-L" it's some sort of genetic fruitation of an apple and a grape. It looks like an apple and has the texture of an apple, but it indeed tastes like a grape.

These things are sold in special plastic four packs at an outrageous price, which is unfortunate, but I still buy them. The only other comparable fruit I spend that much money for is the Asian Pear, which is apparently not a pear at all, but a freak pear/apple hybrid.

The Asian Pear is officially my favorite fruit ever.

As you can tell, I am a fruity person, it doesn't pass, I'm always like this, just give me some sweet juice with no seeds and I'm as happy as a worm in a Fuji.

Happy Fruit Day!
